O'Neil entered the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005 when the singer was still in high school. The quality of her singing impressed jury, and she received a promotion to an audition in the 100th place. O'Neil was given high praise by the judges. However, she experienced substantial losses during the Top 10 weeks as well as the Top 9 of the Finals as she fell into the bottom 3 and bottom 2 in both cases. They were stunned by the results and encouraged the audience to support singers with impressive singing skills, like Melissa. O'Neil's performances were so good that she didn't even make it to the bottom three once ever again. Following two stunning performance on September 7 2005, the day that O'Neil and Rex Goudie advanced to the competition's final two contestants, the judge Werner reported that headlines in the morning papers will read: O'Neil beat Goudie to become the third Canadian Idol, the first female winner, and also the most youthful winner in the competition's history . O'Neil received a phone call from Canadian Premier Paul Martin congratulating her on winning Canadian Idol immediately.
